Do you ever remember watching the movie Star Wars? If yes, do you remember the clones in that movie? It was always amazing to see how the technology in the Star Wars universe was so advanced that it could produce thousands of clones at once. They even made these clones to look and think like an adult by the age of 10! However, what if somebody showed you that this sci-fi universe is actually not that far away?

Scientists in Yunnan province have successfully cloned a dog from the police sniffer dog this year. This dog, named Kunxun, is modified with the help of Beijing-based Sinogene Biotechnology Company and Yunnan Agricultural University so that the training time and cost of the police dog can be significantly reduced. Normally, a police dog would take five years and approximately 500,000 yuan (100,894 SGD) with no guarantee of success. However, Kunxun is a genetically modified dog that is meant to be trained in significantly lower time at a cheaper cost, along with a higher chance of success. Kunxun is currently being trained extensively as a police dog, and we are expected to hear the results soon. It seems we are not too far behind from the sci-fi movies that we saw as a kid.
